Auctions / Auction: 19th Century European Paintings Including German, Austrian and Central European Paintings, The Oriental Sale, Spanish Painting and the Scandinavian Sale

London. 2 June 2010, 2:30 PM

34-35 New Bond Street

Representing some one hundred and eighty artists from more than twenty countries, sale of Century European Paintings features the work of leading painters working across the Continent during the 19 and early 20 centuries.

Led by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s classically inspired Jeune femme a la fontaine, other highlights range from the mythical monumentally of Leo Reiffenstein’s The Roses of Heliogabalus to the noble humility of Joaquin Sorolla’s The Christening. German tensions of the nineteen thirties are suggested in Lotte Laserstein’s panoramic Evening over Postdam, while the dry heat of Cairo is evoked in Jean-Leo Gerome’s Muezzin as he calls the faithful to prayer. Further afield Christian Krohg conjures the dramatic moment of Leif Eriksson Discovering America five hundred years before Christopher Columbus.
